Greater support for early childhood services to promote healthy eating

The Department of Education and Training’s Authorised Officers are helping early childhood services across Victoria to promote healthy eating.

While providing healthy food is a national requirement for early childhood education and care services, it used to be hard for Department’s Authorised Officers – the people responsible assessing services against the National Quality Standard - to say whether a centre was meeting this requirement or not.

To resolve this issue, the Department of Education and Training teamed up with the Healthy Eating Advisory Service.Together, they established a new process for assessing healthy eating in childhood services and embedded healthy eating into the Department’s existing auditing processes. The newly created step-by-step guide Healthy eating in the National Quality Standard .

As a result, the Department of Education and Training’s Authorised Officers can now easily identify services that require further assistance and refer them to the Healthy Eating Advisory Service for further support.

By marrying the Department’s existing compliance infrastructure with the expertise of the Healthy Eating Advisory Service healthy eating is being embedded across over 4,000 early childhood services across Victoria.
