Victorians are consuming too much salt, which can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
Australians currently consume almost double the maximum recommended intake of salt each day, putting them at risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Around 75% of it is hiding in processed foods – can you guess where?
The Heart Foundation (Vic) has launched Unpack the Salt, a consumer awareness campaign that aims to lift the lid on just how much salt can be found in everyday supermarket products like cooking sauces. New research recently released from the George Institute showed these sauces, are packed with salt, with some brands almost 100 times worse than others. More food category reports will be released soon.
Here are some easy ways to cut salt consumption:
- Read the label for sodium content and pick the lowest salt option.
- Cook fresh with easy low-salt recipes
- Use #salternatives like flavourful herbs and spices.
