Loddon Mallee tackling climate change to improve health

Acting on climate change presents a significant opportunity to improve health, reduce inequality, create healthy and sustainable environments and service system.

The Loddon Mallee Public Health Unit (LMPHU) is using a range of strategies to tackle climate change through local leadership and collaboration.

The Unit has collaborated with regional partners to develop and implement the inaugural Loddon Mallee Climate and Health Framework. The Framework serves as a guide to drive momentum and positive change in addressing climate-related health challenges.

Established in early 2023, the Framework was shaped by a Steering Committee selected for its geographical representation, expertise, and focus on priority populations. The committee fosters cooperation and collaboration across sectors by building on existing connections within professional networks.

The Framework supports leadership in climate mitigation and adaptation from a health system perspective, while strengthening awareness of the link between climate change and health.

LMPHU is assisting seven healthcare services with sustainability priorities, action plans, and policies. To enhance public engagement, new communication tools – including a poster and translated infographics – have been developed.

Additionally, LMPHU has formed the Climate and Health Leaders Loddon Mallee, which is a cross-sector leadership group of thirteen expert stakeholders to drive collective climate action.

The unit is also working with other Public Health Units to advance coordinated efforts on climate and health.

Through these initiatives, LMPHU is fostering regional collaboration and practical solutions to address climate-related health impacts.
