The opening of Rural Northwest Health’s new café is providing an ideal opportunity for the service to help tackle overweight and obesity in the local community.
With the support of the Healthy Eating Advisory Service and the Healthy Choices guidelines, the YarriYak café has created a menu where close to 70% of the items on sale are in the healthiest GREEN category. This exceeds the 50% minimum GREEN Healthy Choices requirement.
YarriYak café also ensures GREEN items are highly visible and RED items are available in smaller portion sizes. And they only offer water and hot beverages.
Rural Northwest Health credits the café’s success to strong leadership from management, alongside training café staff to understand and implement the guidelines with realistic and sustainable changes.
The Healthy Eating Advisory Service provided training to café staff on the use of the Healthy Choices guidelines; and also assisted the café to adapt existing recipes and to develop new healthier alternatives.
