The "Move Moira" - Get Active Campaign is supported by the Health Prevention Collaborative, a collaboration between the Moira Shire Council, NCN Health and Yarrawonga Health, to provide opportunities for the community of the Moira Shire to "Move More" throughout April.
The campaign is designed to provide community members with the opportunity to join social/hobby groups, sports clubs, community organisations and services that promote physical activity, social connectedness and physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.
Community members are encouraged to consider physical activity differently through incorporating easy ways to regularly participate in low or no cost activity, and to be ‘active’ in their community in whatever way is enjoyable for them.
The campaign is underpinned by local collaboration and community engagement, with the key focus to improve health equity, using a size inclusive and all-abilities approach promoting evidence-informed practice and capacity building in a wide range of settings, groups and organisations.
An online calendar of local activities and events for the month of April was developed in collaboration with 28 community groups and organisations and distributed to community members. Four launch events were held in Cobram, Nathalia, Numurkah, and Yarrawonga during the school holidays, with approximately 750 people coming along to enjoy the many children and family activities on offer. The campaign included providing the All-Abilities Freedom Frame to enable people of any age or ability to take part in a skateboarding workshop held in Cobram. This piece of equipment enabled anyone to participate regardless of balance, mobility or any other impairment.
Feedback from the participants at the events and activities included: "Engaging activities and staff engaging with my kids and not just me", "Thank you for catering for all abilities" and "excellent school holiday fun for our town".
Feedback from our community partners: "I think this is a great community engagement for organisations to promote what they offer. Being able to join in and actually try sports/activities can sometimes be a better introduction than just seeing a post/advertisement online".
